dream land

I've been obsessed with vintage National Geographic photos lately, and vintage scenery/landscape photos in general. They are literally just so aesthetically perfect and beautiful, and I just wish I could go into the little worlds I see and imagine in the photographs. Digital photography is so phlegmatic and cold. It just doesn't capture images the same way film does, and it just sort of gives photographs an empty feeling. Lately it seems I've been on a never ending journey to discover myself and where I belong and who I am. I think I've finally found my style, which is a mix of earthy and punk vibes. After trying practically everything else, this is what feels most comfortable to me, and what expresses my inner self most accurately. I've been getting really interested in the environment and nature and the naturalness of everything. I'm currently in the process of redecorating my room yet again, and I want to cover the walls in dream catchers, maps, vintage photographs, tea bags, and other pretty stuff. I want my room to represent a sanctuary of things I love/that inspire me. Dried tea bags just look really cool and pretty and smell awesome and add that extra aesthetic touch I need. I have been collecting them for forever so it'll be nice to finally put them to good use.

I know people always say high school is the worst four years of your life, but I actually really like it. I'm more focused on being true to myself rather than conforming for acceptance, and I'm also just surrounded by more positive and encouraging people than I was in middle school. I actually look forward to going to school, and once I'm there I really enjoy it.

The one thing I can't stand is my art class. It's very concrete and it's hard to make assignments personal and expressive because it's a portfolio class intended for juniors and seniors. I took it this year (sophomore year) because I wanted to develop my drawing skills, but the only thing I've learned is that I hate drawing. We have a homework assignment every week, and they usually take me 3-6 hours, It's so annoying because I'd rather collage a self portrait or do prints or something more abstract and interpretive than a simple pencil drawing and background, but I can't because "that's not the assignment." I think I'm just going to start pushing the boundaries so it's more fun for me and more enjoyable.

  1. Ughh I know what you mean, it's so annoying doing work to be assessed. I do better work for myself that I don't get assessed on. And agreed- National Geographic photographers were/are a talented bunch. It always reminds me how beautiful the world is! (cheesey but true)

  2. BLEGH that sucks about your art class... mine is kind of like that too, except we're making stuff from clay (pots though)... it's kind of ok but i don't like my teacher :(

  3. haha. The one with the huge blurred out red flower in the foreground is on the wall of my room. I am constantly buying vintage National Geographics because their picture quality is infinitely more expressive and I just love the photos in National Geographics anyway. I hate to tell you that I tear them up to use in collages/put on my walls, as ideally I'd preserve their beauty, but yeah. They're in collages or on my walls.
    <3 you.

  4. Also, even though I hate pencil drawings in art, it's really good to get drawing under your belt if you want to get better at art. It sucks that the class is completely one medium though--that seems insane for all year.

  5. those pictures are so awesome!
also, I hate art classes because I think art shouldn't be something you MUST do, but something you really WANT to. Art classes here are awful -.-
